Amazon Product Photography Requirements — And Why Getting Them Right Matters

If you’re selling on Amazon, your photos are doing more work than almost anything else on your listing. They’re the first thing a shopper sees in search results, the main reason someone clicks — or doesn’t — and the closest thing to holding your product in their hands before buying.

Getting them right isn’t just about making things look nice. Amazon has specific, strict image requirements, and if your photos don’t meet them, your listing can be suppressed without warning. Here’s what you need to know — and why working with a professional product photographer makes all the difference.

The Main Image: Amazon’s Non-Negotiables

Your main image is the one that appears in search results. It’s the most important photo on your listing, and Amazon’s rules here are firm:

  • Pure white background — no exceptions. Amazon requires RGB 255, 255, 255. Not off-white, not light gray, not eggshell. Pure white. Even a slightly warm or cool background can get your listing flagged.
  • The product must fill at least 85% of the frame. Too much white space around a small product will hurt your click-through rate and may not meet Amazon’s standards.
  • No text, logos, watermarks, or graphics overlaid on the main image.
  • No props, accessories, or additional items that aren’t included in the sale.
  • Square format — Amazon is designed around square images. If your image isn’t square, Amazon will crop it, and you’ll lose control of how your product appears.
  • Minimum 1000 x 1000 pixels to enable the zoom function — which shoppers use constantly and which significantly increases conversion rates. 2000 x 2000 pixels or larger is recommended.

A professional studio will know all of this and deliver images that meet every requirement without you having to think about it.

Secondary Images: Where You Tell the Full Story

Amazon allows up to 9 images per listing, with 7 displaying by default on desktop. Your main image gets the click — your secondary images close the sale.

This is where you can show:

  • Multiple angles — front, back, side, top, detail shots
  • Scale and dimensions — showing the product next to a familiar object or including size callouts
  • Packaging — what arrives at the customer’s door
  • Lifestyle context — the product in use, helping the buyer imagine owning it
  • Infographics — feature callouts, materials, key benefits (text overlays are allowed on secondary images)
  • Close-ups — texture, craftsmanship, fine detail

Each secondary image is an opportunity to answer a question a shopper might have before they buy. The more thoroughly you answer those questions visually, the fewer reasons someone has to leave your listing.

Why Lighting Is Everything

Amazon shoppers can’t touch your product. They can’t pick it up, turn it over, or hold it to the light. Your photography has to do all of that work for them.

A professional studio uses controlled, intentional lighting — not natural light from a window, which changes by the hour and can’t be replicated consistently across a product line. Softboxes, strobes, reflectors, and diffusers are all tools that let a photographer shape light precisely for each product type:

  • Glossy surfaces need careful control to avoid unwanted reflections
  • Matte products need even, shadow-free light to show true color
  • Glassware and translucent items require backlighting techniques to show form without blown-out highlights
  • Jewelry and fine detail needs precision lighting to capture texture and sparkle without losing warmth

Getting the lighting wrong doesn’t just make images look bad — it misrepresents your product, which leads to returns and negative reviews.

File Specifications That Matter

Beyond the visual requirements, Amazon has technical specs your files need to meet:

  • Accepted formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF (JPEG is standard and preferred)
  • Color mode: sRGB or CMYK (sRGB is recommended)
  • File size: under 10MB per image
  • File naming: use your product’s ASIN or UPC followed by a variant code (e.g., B08XYZ1234.MAIN.jpg)

A professional photographer will deliver files organized, labeled, and sized correctly — so you’re not scrambling to reprocess everything before uploading.

The Local Advantage for NJ Amazon Sellers

For Amazon sellers based in central New Jersey — Princeton, Trenton, Hamilton, Pennington, Hopewell, Lambertville, and beyond — working with a local product photography studio has real practical advantages:

  • Drop off in person. No packing, insuring, and shipping your products — especially valuable for fragile, high-value, or bulky items.
  • Stay for the shoot. You can be present, give direction, and approve images on the spot rather than waiting days for a first look.
  • Faster turnaround. Local logistics mean less time waiting and more time getting your listings live.
  • Ongoing relationship. As your product line grows, you have a photographer who already knows your brand and can deliver consistent results every time.
